Who is developing The Witcher 3 for PS5 and Xbox Series X?
First of all, the president Adam Kicinski explained that the work being carried out on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt they will not impact in any way on those outstanding for Cyberpunk 2077. The next-gen development of the former, in fact, is external, and was placed in the hands of Saber Interactive.
If the name does not sound new to you, it is because the software house has already taken care of both the 4K upscaling of the game, and its surprising porting to the Nintendo Switch. On the changes that we must expect in relation to the game, however, Kicinski explained:
We asked [a Saber Interactive] to prepare a next-gen port and, as I mentioned in my presentation, we expect it to be a fully next generation experience.
It will have to have features that are specific to the next-gen, but it won’t interfere with Cyberpunk 2077 next-gen, which is being developed internally by a new team.
We will then see how the game will manage to take advantage of SSDs, for example, or how it will take advantage of specificities like the PS5’s DualSense controller.
And for PC gamers?
Finally, since the next-gen announcement also spoke of a new one Complete Edition for PC gamers, the vice president Michał Nowakowski explained to investors what PC gamers can expect.
“There will be a patch that it will improve the graphics quality and add some extra features, and how obvious it is we will not charge people for a patch». To explain himself, Nowakowski added:
PC users will download an update that will improve their copy of the game, but we don’t want any more money alone. If you have a copy of the game on PC, just download this update. And we’re not going to raise the price of the game on PC. We consider this as a version update of The Witcher 3 already available.
Why release The Witcher 3 on PS5 and Xbox Series X?
CD Projekt’s vision is clear and there is a precise reason behind Geralt’s landing on next-gen too: lengthen the life cycle of the game. Asked about this, President Kicinski explained to investors that “The key reason behind this decision is the desire to extend the life cycle of the game.”
And the reason is soon said:
The Witcher 3 is still selling very well and we think you have an updated version, on par with the newer games – or the ones that will come out – is a big plus in terms of sales over the next ones – who knows? – five, or four years? Looking ahead, it will be important to add this version of the game to our catalog.
CD Projekt confirmed that The Witcher 3 will arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X in the course of 2021, but a more precise launch window is not yet known. Originally, the title was released in 2015 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, receiving critical acclaim and bringing new audiences to discover the fantasy world born from the pen of Andrzej Sapkowski.
Recently, Geralt also starred in a television adaptation on Netflix with Henry Cavill, for which Second season shooting is underway.
