Windows will focus entirely on widgets with a revamped full screen widget panel. The panel is being tested in the most recent Insider Preview build, version 25201.

With the arrival of Windows 11, the start menu widgets have been moved to a panel that opens on the left side of the screen. The panel includes agenda, news and weather widgets, which you can turn on and off at will. Microsoft now seems to be expanding the panel, especially when it comes to the size of the widget panel. In the recent preview build for Windows 11, version 25201 the software giant introduced the expanded view.
Expanded view for widgets
Once expanded view is enabled, the widget panel will be displayed in full screen. Also, the panel in Expanded View mode appears to display four widgets in width. It is unknown if this increases if you have a larger screen, such as an ultrawide screen with a 21: 9 aspect ratio. By the way, the panel won’t open in Expanded View mode by default. If you don’t enable it, the panel will continue to open in an area on the left side of the screen. According to Microsoft, Windows will remember your preferred format and open the panel in that mode by default (normal or fill).

Along with the expansion of the widget panel, we also see changes to the Game Pass for Xbox widget. From now on, you can log into your Xbox account directly via the widget. The arrival of widgets from third-party developers is still pending. Support for third-party widgets was announced in May, but it doesn’t seem to get off the ground. At least, that’s what we see in the foreground.
The experimental search bar disappears
For now, it is not known whether Microsoft actually intends to keep the expanded view of the widget panel. If the company implements the feature on Windows, it may not be available until at least 2023. After all, the next stable Windows update will appear – it’s expected – within a week, while this feature is still being tested.
One feature we certainly won’t see in future versions of Windows 11 is the custom search bar. Microsoft tested three designs for this, but decided to roll it back into the new preview version. The company says it has completed testing in recent insider releases and has received sufficient feedback.
