The WiFi name that cracks the iPhone

In recent years, we have seen several examples of some things that the iPhone does not handle.

Among other things, we saw in 2015 that one text message could crash iPhone, and the same thing happened in 2018, then an Indian sign was all that was needed to get the phone to restart, and you did not get into the messaging app afterwards.

Android phones have not been completely exempt from such things either. Last summer, Android phones crashed if you used a special image as wallpaper.

WiFi trouble

Several US media outlets are now reporting that special SSIDs (ie names of WiFi networks) can be troublesome for iPhone users.

The founder of the website secret.club, with the slogan “we break software”, Carl Schou, has discovered a weakness in iOS – latest version (14.6) included.

He created a WiFi network with the name %p%s%s%s%s%n, and when he connected with an iPhone, the entire WiFi function of the phone was turned off, without the possibility to reconnect:

This is probably because percentages in text strings have special meanings in C and associated programming languages, according to Bleepingcomputer.

The network name should not cause any problems for people with Android phones.

Can be fixed

Neither restarting the phone nor changing the network name solves the problem, Schou reports, but fortunately there is an opportunity to get WiFi up and running again.

Then you have to navigate to settings, generally and reset, and then choose to reset all network settings on the phone.

Apple has not yet commented on this error, but if we know the company correctly, this problem will be fixed in a future update.
