The representative of the WHO European Office, Catherine Smalloud, warned on Wednesday about the situation with the coronavirus in the Western Balkans and assessed it as extremely serious.
“In the Western Balkans, we have a situation where hospitals need to be re-equipped, which means that other types of medical services are interrupted and delayed, which again means that the system will be loaded in the future. “We must take all measures without waiting to reduce the rate of infection,” Smolud told RTS.
She also said that the three variants of the coronavirus, first discovered in Britain, South Africa and Brazil, were very worrying, but stressed that the WHO was closely monitoring the mutations.
“Some vaccines may be less effective in cases of mutated viruses, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work,” Smallwood said, adding that this is possible and that an additional dose of the vaccine will need to be given at some point.
According to Smolud, Europe has so far not vaccinated enough people to enter another phase of the pandemic, and it is dangerous to think so.
