Washington, 26 may (EFE).- The White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, condemned this Thursday the ban on abortion in the state of Oklahoma and affirmed that the president of the United States, Joe Biden, has promised to “protect” this right.

“Yesterday afternoon, the Governor of Oklahoma enacted the most extreme law to nullify the fundamental right of women to make their own reproductive decisions,” criticized the Press Secretary in her daily press conference.

Jean-Pierre warned that this legislation is part of “a growing effort” by Republicans across the country to “roll back freedoms,” and assured that after banning abortion they will do the same with same-sex marriage.

“These rights are increasingly in danger,” he said.

Given this, he assured that Biden believes “that women have the fundamental right to make their own decisions” and his Administration has promised to “protect these constitutional rights.”

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, a Republican, signed a new law on Wednesday that bans abortion in the state from the moment of fertilization, considered the most restrictive legislation in the United States.

In addition, following the line of the controversial law against abortion approved last year in Texas, the new norm allows citizens to denounce any company or person that assists a woman in the interruption of her pregnancy.

The ban on abortion in Oklahoma was approved in the expectation that the Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, will overturn in June the “Roe versus Wade” ruling, which since 1973 protects the constitutional right to abortion throughout the country.

Civil society organizations estimate that at least 26 of the country’s 50 states, governed by conservatives, will ban abortion once the Supreme Court issues its ruling.
