The White House said on Friday that it was disturbed by the spread of fake pornographic images on the Internet of American pop singer Taylor Swift, describing the widely circulated footage as “deeply disturbing.”
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press conference that social media companies “have an important role to play in enforcing their own rules” to prevent the spread of such misinformation.
“This is very concerning. So we will do what we can to address this issue,” she said, adding that Congress should take legislative action on the issue.
Fake pornographic images of pop star Swift, which are believed to have been faked using artificial intelligence, spread widely on social media this week, with the images being viewed millions of times.
Jean-Pierre considered that lax enforcement of the law against fabricated images often disproportionately affects women.
She continued: “While social media companies make their own independent decisions about content moderation, we believe they have an important role to play in enforcing their own regulations, to prevent the spread of misinformation and fabricated pornographic images of real people.”
