The White House on Thursday backtracked on an earlier statement by President Joe Biden suggesting he supported holding new elections in Venezuela.
“The president was referring to how absurd it is that Maduro and his representatives They have not told the truth about the elections of July 28“, he said in a statement.
The National Security Council (NSC) also clarified in a statement that Biden had only made a general statement on the US position regarding Venezuela.
“For the majority of the Venezuelan people, for the United States and for an increasing number of countries, it is clear that Edmundo González was the candidate who received the most votes,” he added.
Confusion arose when Biden appeared briefly before reporters before boarding the presidential helicopter Marine One when reporters asked the president if he supported the idea of a new runoff in the South American country.
“Yes, I support it,” Biden replied.although the White House said the president did not hear the question correctly.
At a press conference also on Thursday, White House national security communications adviser John Kirby denied that the US had raised the possibility of offering amnesty to Maduro.
“No, it is not true that Maduro has been offered amnesty. And what we want to see is the actual vote counts, the data, and we haven’t seen that yet. So we still have to see it,” said Kirby, who insisted that the US believes that “Gonzalez won the majority of the votes.”
