US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Israel had accepted a US-backed proposal for a ceasefire and the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip, and called on the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas to do the same, the Associated Press reported.
Blinken announced this after a two and a half hour meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a last ditch effort to reach an agreement, BTA adds.
After his talks with Netanyahu, the US secretary of state met with families of the Israeli hostages, while hundreds of demonstrators gathered in protest outside his hotel in Tel Aviv, calling for the release of the hostages, DPA reported.
Blinken’s statement comes shortly before US President Joe Biden delivers a speech later today at the opening of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to officially be nominated as the Democratic nominee for the November presidential election.
