How do you think director Wes Anderson would have adapted JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings? An artificial intelligence (AI) has answered the question with the trailer “The Whimsical Fellowship”. Will this be the future of film?
The trailer is trending on YouTube “The Whimsical Fellowship”, showing an alleged Lord of the Rings adaptation by Wes Anderson. What looks deceptively real is the result of an AI that generated this trailer. Behind it is the online portal Curious Refuge from Los Angeles. The portal’s CEO, Caleb Ward, talks about the future of filmmaking with AI in An Hour Movie.
This is what the future of film with AI could look like
Caleb Ward and his wife Shelby both work in the film industry and have spent years exploring how AI can transform, simplify and advance filmmaking. Together they founded the portal Curious Refuge, “The world’s first AI Filmmaking Studio”, as they call it themselves. An exchange platform about the developments of AI in the film business and online training center with webinars for everyone who wants to know what is already possible today and where the journey could lead.
“Right now, AI can, for example, already write screenplays, develop ideas, visualize images, animate faces and lip movements.”

In addition, AI can develop a voice that doesn’t actually exist and project it in sync with lip movements, explains Caleb Ward. “She helps with editing, can paste or cut out objects herself, and she can also expand a scene. So, starting from a close-up, she can zoom out to create a full matching background, and more,” adds the filmmaker.
In addition to “The Whimsical Fellowship”, other film trailers that were produced by or with the help of AI have been published on the Curious Refuge platform.
Deutschlandfunk-Nova moderator Tom Westerholt finds the development of AI in the film industry somewhere between cool and exciting, scary and intimidating. Tom talks to Caleb Ward about what’s possible now and what’s to come – and what impact this could have on the film industry.
