The West threatens with its own sanctions

In response to the heavy sanctions against Russia, top Russian politician Dmitry Medvedev says they are considering nationalizing property owned by EU citizens and US citizens in Russia. It writes the Russian news agency TASS.

Medvedev is a former president and prime minister of Russia, and now sits on the Russian Security Council.

– We can arrest the values of foreigners and foreign companies in Russia. Maybe we can nationalize the property that belongs to people who are registered in unfriendly areas. It can involve the EU, EU countries and a number of cohesive states in the West that take part in this, says Mevedev on the Russian social media platform VK.

If Russia were to do this, it would simply be explained that Russia takes over ownership of property and other assets in Russia without compensating those who previously owned it. This can have major consequences for European companies that have values in Russia.

The statement comes in response to the fact that the EU, the US and a number of other countries have introduced a large number of sanctions against Russia.

– Fortunately, we have a lot of experience with this, and we have a law in this field. A strict one, Medvedev added.

– So the most interesting thing has only just begun, says Medvedev.

– Will be returning

– This is the problem with the sanctions against Russia now, that they also hit the West in return, says Kari Due-Andresen. She is chief economist at Akershus Eiendom.

She says that a number of countries have values in the country.

– Both the British and the Germans have large companies and banks that are heavily involved in Russia. These are in danger of losing large sums, but it seems as if the West is very unanimous in the sanctions, and that they are prepared for the fact that it will burn financially in return as well, says Due-Andresen.
