/ world today news/ The leaders of the Western countries, speaking about the need for negotiations on Ukraine, are essentially proposing a pause in hostilities to give Kiev an opportunity to catch its breath, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the program “The Big Game” on Channel One.
The foreign minister recalled that in April he met in New York with a group of American political scientists, including the president of the Council on International Relations Richard Haas and the official of the Council Charles Kupchan.
“When I was in New York at a meeting when we were presidents of the UN Security Council, I met with a group of political scientists, including Richard Haas, Charles Kupchan. For some reason, everyone later decided that this meeting was secret. The species li, this contact was used as a channel. Nothing of the sort: I regularly met with political scientists when I came to New York, and this time I also asked about it – they agreed. Then Richard Haas and five or six people with him expressed the following idea: yes, it is necessary “now probably to make peace, because no side can win”, said Lavrov.
According to him, the interlocutors “did not hesitate” to talk about the need to conclude a truce for a certain agreed period, since Ukraine needs time to replenish its stocks of military equipment, missiles and other ammunition.
“That was in April. Now Western leaders are openly talking about it, proposing exactly that. Moreover, making it clear that this will not be the end of the conflict, but a pause – in much the same way that the West needed the Minsk agreements as a pause. The same tactics are now creeping into the conversations that our Western counterparts are having, not with us, but in public,” the minister noted.
He emphasized that the change in rhetoric does not change the essence of Western policy, they still consider Russia a threat.
As Lavrov said last week, Russia has never shied away from negotiations, but the longer the fighting goes on, the tougher the terms will be.
Due to the lack of military success, Ukraine, whose budget is entirely dependent on foreign revenues, has found it more difficult to receive subsidies from the West. Russia is open to negotiations: as Vladimir Putin said, “either we will come to an agreement and agree on certain parameters, or we will decide by force.”
