George Perec (1936-1982) is best known for his “La vie, mode d’emploi”, translated as “Life, a manual”, a set of stories set in an apartment building.
The French writer loved language games. In 1969 he wrote a novel about the mysterious disappearance of the letter e, “Disappearance† The letter does not appear once in the entire book. In “Returns” from 1972 it is just the opposite: only the e occurs and no other vowels.
