The Weeknd will now go through life on social media under his real name. On all his channels, the Canadian singer is now called Abel Tesfaye again.
The 33-year-old artist asked his followers in April if he should change his name back. “ABEL, formerly known as The Weeknd?” he wrote on Twitter. With that he made a reference to Prince, who changed his stage name to TAFKAP (The Artist Formerly Known As Prince).
Tesfaye recently revealed that he wanted to “kill” The Weeknd. “I’m on a certain path now. I’m ready to close The Weeknd chapter,” the artist told W Magazine. “As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I wanted to say.”
The singer won four Grammys under his stage name and has more than 45 platinum singles and albums to his name. Guinness World Records crowned him the most popular artist in the world in March thanks to his more than 111 million Spotify listeners.
