The Weeknd breaks 2 all-time records on Spotify

For the first time an artist has surpassed 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and that artist has been The Weeknd. Abel Tesfaye’s project has released this week a new remix of ‘Die for You’ with Ariana Grande and its presence opening the Today’s Top Hits playlist -followed by 30 million people- has definitely boosted its number of listeners to the magical number of 100,450,642.

The remix of ‘Die for You’ reached the top 2 on Spotify’s Global chart last Friday and is actually already down, at number 4 (it is also number 4 in the British midweeks), unable to dethrone ‘Flowers’ ‘ by Miley Cyrus, but at least it has served to break this historic record.

The second historical record of The Weeknd that we are discussing today was broken a few weeks ago but it is worth recovering it for its relevance. On January 1st ‘Blinding Lights’ officially became the most streamed song in history on Spotify, surpassing Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’, both of which had over 3 billion streams.

Below these lines you can find the top 10 of a list that you can consult at the Wikipedia, and in which the absolute masculine majority attracts attention. Australian Tones and I is the only female lead artist, and then we could add Kyla and Halsey’s guest vocals on tracks by Drake and The Chainsmokers.

In the top 100 of the most listened to, there are already 4 songs by Dua Lipa, 2 by Billie Eilish, 2 by Ariana Grande, etc. The Weeknd places 3 songs in the top 100: besides ‘Blinding Lights’, ‘Starboy’ at #15 and ‘The Hills’ at #48.

As for rock songs, the presence of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen (#24), ‘Mr Brightside’ by The Killers (68), ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ by Arctic Monkeys (#79) and ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis (#84).
