The web is stormy: did Robert De Niro confront pro-Palestinian protesters?

Robert De Niro (Twitter photo X) A video of American film actor Robert De Niro, winner of two Oscars and two Golden Globes, which was distributed this morning and went viral, showed De Niro confronting pro-Palestinian protesters in New York and expressing support for Israel. De Niro, who, as seen in the video, stumbled into a pro-Palestinian demonstration, did not flinch even when the crowd shouted back at him. “It’s not a movie. It’s real,” De Niro is heard exclaiming. “Now you have to listen, you have to work, you have to make sure your work is done. If you talk nonsense you have to go home. They said they will do it again and again! You don’t want that to happen, nobody wants that. Let’s be serious”.

First, the video was published on the Twitter of the right-wing organization “If You Want”. He then shared the entertainment pages on Instagram and Tiktok and several local news sites. It even gained further resonance with its distribution in the pages of public opinion leaders, including Yanon Magal.

But although it was published that De Niro expressed support for Israel and confronted protesters, at no point in the video does the actor refer to the war, Israel, Gaza, Jews or any protesters. The translation attached to the video by “If You Want” reads, among other things, that De Niro said that “they said they would do it again (October 7)”, while the same addition that appears in parentheses was not said by him at all.

The documentation was actually taken from the filming of “Zero Day”, a new Netflix series starring De Niro that is currently filming in New York, and it was distributed on the network three days earlier. Although some of the media assumed that pro-Palestinian protesters interfered with the filming of the series, this claim has no factual basis.

A person who claims to have been an extra in the series during that day clarified that it was a completely scripted text, as did the American actress Maujean Marneau (“The Blacklist”), one of the stars of the series who tweeted in response to reports that she recognized De Niro’s speech from the script.

Meanwhile, the publication of the video has already started to cause real damage, with websites such as the American Daily Beast defining the event with the headline “Robert De Niro’s acting clip hijacked by pro-Israel activists”.

The streaming giant Netflix gave an official response to the AP news agency: “This is a return to the scene that was filmed on Saturday, April 27, as part of the production.” In addition, it was clarified that De Niro’s speech was scripted and had nothing to do with Israel or the war.
