The weather at Pentecost – One part of the country stands out

Are you wondering if you should find an umbrella or sunglasses during the Whitsun weekend? The answer is probably both, regardless of where in the country you are. This weekend, changing weather is expected throughout Norway.

State meteorologist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Pernille Borander, warns of a generally gray Pentecost for large parts of the country. But one part of the country stands out.

Friday will be the best

– In Eastern Norway and Southern Norway, Friday will be the nicest day. There may be some rain showers, but there will also be inclement weather. On Saturday and Sunday it will be gray and wet due to low pressure from the south, but on Monday it will be somewhat lighter weather, says Borander.

– Low pressure on all sides ensures a rainy Pentecost weekend in southern Norway, and Østafjells will probably walk away with the prize for the wettest Pentecost, the Meteorological Institute writes on Twitter.

Both Eastern Norway and Southern Norway have already had more precipitation in several places than is normal for the whole month of May, but even though the Pentecost weekend in southern Norway seems to be very wet, there may still be some pleasant weather with a glimpse of sun.

The state meteorologist can warn that one part of the country will have a pretty nice Pentecost weekend.

Pentecost weather winner

– Central Norway will definitely have the nicest long weekend. It will not be sunny and cloudless skies, but there are good opportunities for long periods of sun in large parts of Møre og Romsdal, Trøndelag and Nordland, says Borander.

Also in Central Norway there will be changing cloud cover. If the plan is to go to the cabin or the mountains, it may be okay to dress for all kinds of weather.

In Western Norway, Pentecost is quite similar to the east and south – only a little wetter.

– On Friday it will be mostly stay-at-home weather, but then there will be gradually more precipitation throughout the day. Saturday and Sunday will also be the wettest days in Western Norway. On Monday it will also be gray and wet. It will generally be a cloudy Pentecost in Western Norway south of Stadt, says Borander.

Winter is not over in Troms and Finnmark.

– In Troms and Finnmark, winter can come to visit again. It will be cooler during the evening on Friday and much of the precipitation that has been forecast for the weekend will come as snow. The snow can quickly settle on the entire Finnmark plateau and in eastern Finnmark, warns the State Meteorologist.

With changing low pressures on all sides, it does not look like summer weather is in sight in the coming weeks.

Be careful

Peak hikes are in the wind during the day, but snow and sun are a scary combination, according to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate. They ask people to be careful in the high mountains.

Håvard Toft Larsen, duty officer for avalanche warning in Varsom.no, says that wet avalanches are the most dominant avalanche problem right now.

– It is generally hot in the mountains which in turn causes the snow to melt. Weak layers can cause quite large flake landslides when the water drains into the layers. It is an insecure joker who can come as a great surprise, says the foreman.

A moderate landslide danger has been announced in large parts of the country, with the exception of the Finnmark coast, Lofoten and Vesterålen and Heiane, where there is little danger of landslides.

Larsen recommends those who do not have good enough knowledge of avalanche terrain to avoid terrain steeper than 30 degrees.
