It is a strong symbol, a boost in the gradual exit from the health crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is the main US public health agency, announced Thursday, May 13 that fully vaccinated people can remove their masks outdoors and in most indoor locations.
More than 117 million Americans, 35.8% of the population, are fully immunized, that is, they have received two injections if necessary. In France, this is the case for just over 9 million people, 13.54% of French people, according to CovidTracker. In spite of the delay, the relaxation of the wearing of the mask is in part envisaged.
At the beginning of May, the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, explained at the microphone of Europe 1 that he hoped “sincerely” be able to allow the end of the mask outdoors this summer, without guaranteeing it. Outside the most populated and frequented places, walking outside without a mask is already authorized in several places in France.
A relaxation in case of vaccination?
Regarding the wearing of the mask indoors, no specific track has been put forward, but an opinion issued by the High Council of Public Health (HCSP) on April 11 offers a track. “In a private, family or friendly setting in a closed indoor environment”, the HCSP “recommends” that it be allowed not to wear a mask provided that everyone is vaccinated and that no one is at very high risk for the virus. The other barrier gestures, including the limit of six people and distancing, should be respected.
However, no official instructions have been given in this regard. Wearing a mask remains mandatory in closed public places, and the deconfinement schedule does not offer an exit on this point.
