The Way Home: Women of the Mobilized Confronting Militiamen and Officials

The militiamen warned the women about the responsibility they bear when participating in unauthorized actions and made them show their phones and Telegram chats. Important Stories is aware of at least six such visits, and the women did not publicly announce their intention to hold actions.

“I don’t know how they found us. The phone numbers are hidden. We were supposed to gather in Kemerovo, but only 60 people gathered and gave up. They advised us to join the Novosibirsk chat. I don’t know why they decided to come to us at situation that we didn’t give up. Apparently they want to cut things off from the root,” one of the participants told the publication. Soon after the visit of the militia, the chat of the relatives of those mobilized from Kemerovo was deleted.

And in the Krasnoyarsk region

In the Krasnoyarsk region, the militiamen call the women of the mobilized with a warning about the responsibility for extremism. According to one of the interlocutors of the publication, who received such a call, she was asked if she was a member of the group “The Way Home – Krasnoyarsk Territory.”

The Telegram channel “The Way Home” unites relatives of mobilized people who want their loved ones to return, and was created on August 20, 2023. It has about 11,000 users. Since the beginning of November, there are about 30 regional chats in the channel, some of them are already unavailable, most of them have several dozen members.

From September 2023, “The Way Home” publishes instructions for writing requests to the State Duma, deputies and personally to the Russian President, wanted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Vladimir Putin. On November 12, the Telegram channel published manifestos on behalf of the relatives of those mobilized, saying that they were ready to support whoever would bring their loved ones home.

“We do not impose a political choice, regarding power or regarding the armed conflict in Ukraine. Everyone has the right to determine independently. But we will support whoever returns our men,” the authors of the manifesto write.

At the beginning of November, a proposal appeared in “The Way Home” to go to a coordinated rally, as well as to join the regional actions on the occasion of the anniversary of the October Revolution. The actions passed peacefully, there were no threats to the participants and no one detained them.

Later, a poll appears on the channel asking whether participants are ready to apply to participate in a rally in their federation subject on November 19. A third of just over a thousand voters (35% out of 1,093 people) answered that they were ready. About half of them specify the option “only to participate”. In the end, requests for the rally were submitted in several cities – but so far the authorities in none of them have approved them.

A meeting at the military commissariat instead of a rally

In Chelyabinsk, city hall officials suggested to the mobilized women that instead of a rally, they should organize a meeting with representatives of the military commissariat and the local “Battle Brotherhood”, reported the publication “7×7”. At this meeting, which took place on November 14, the officials refused to hold the rally on the grounds that they had received a notification only in electronic form and not on paper.

Novosibirsk City Hall explains the refusal to hold the rally by saying that its purpose violates the “principle of legality”, but refuses to specify exactly how. The women then decided to hold the rally in “a closed room in the presence of those who have a direct relationship with the mobilized”.

Thrown naked into a pit for refusing to fight unarmed

One of the wives of the mobilized says that Russian soldiers were thrown into a pit naked for refusing to go into battle without proper equipment. They were asked to pay 400 thousand rubles to be taken out of the hole.

According to the woman, people who for some reason were not liked by the command could also fall into the pit. In order to go on leave, the mobilized were offered to pay a bribe of 200,000 rubles.

The way home

In Krasnoyarsk, the authorities are using the covid restrictions as an argument to refuse to hold a rally. After the refusal, the administrator of the chat in which the rally was discussed reported that he could no longer deal with it and handed over the administration of the chat to Valentina Vrontsova – assistant to the MP Elena Penzina. Vrontsova wrote that she was against the rally, and two other participants in the chat who were “for” were removed from the group. Soon the chat itself disappears.

A request to hold a rally has also been submitted in Moscow. The purpose of the action is to support the mobilized, establish the terms of service and demobilize those who were called up at the end of September 2022. So far, there is no known response from the town hall.
