The waters along the Southern Black Sea coast are clean – 2024-08-26 17:30:25

The water is safe for bathing

The quality of the waters for bathing on the Southern Black Sea coast is good, there are no deviations for the moment, Elitsa Karagyozova, chief expert from the “Disease Prevention and Health Promotion” department at the Regional Health Inspectorate (RZI) in Burgas, told BTA.

At the moment, the samples taken from the waters along the Southern Black Sea coast are 309, Karagyozova pointed out. Another 200 are to be made by the end of the summer season.

10 samples were taken for salmonella, and all were negative, added the chief expert.

According to her, samples for salmonella are taken only in the month of August from places where it is possible to get contaminated water into those for bathing. Usually these are places where rivers empty into the sea, she specified.

There are 93 registered beaches, and 49 are bathing areas, noted Karagyozova. Sampling is carried out every 14 days, or two or three times a month, from the 49 zones from the town of Obzor to the village of Sinemorets. Analyzes of microbiological indicators for the presence of intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli are carried out in the period from May to the end of September every year, said the chief expert.

The last sample will be taken on September 24 under good climatic conditions for beaching and bathing, and at an air temperature above 20 degrees, explained Karagyozova.

It is possible for bathing areas located near river mouths to have a negative impact on seawater quality due to the large amounts of inflowing water of the respective river, the expert said. Rains also have a negative impact, as they lead to turbidity and algae, but this in no way poses a danger to human health and does not affect microbiology, assured Karagyozova.

The rivers mainly pass through agricultural lands and when it rains, the waters become saturated with organic matter and chemical elements, which can further deteriorate the quality of the sea water, she said. To avoid bathing in areas where turbidity and a large amount of algae are noticeable, the chief expert recommended.
