The SARS-CoV2 (Covid-19) genomic watch device set up by the Ministry of Health has enabled the detection and confirmation of the circulation of the British variant and its spread in 7 regions of the Kingdom.
“Indeed, the sequencing of the complete genome has allowed the confirmation of the presence of signature mutations of the British variant”, indicates the department in a press release, specifying that to date, “89 strains B.1.1.7 (British variant) have been assigned, and no other variant of concern (VOC) has been confirmed in Morocco ”.
The ministry also stresses that alongside the specific mutations of the variants detected, new mutations are regularly detected but without clinical or epidemiological impact, noting that this viral dynamic is observed around the world.
He added that since the start of the SARS-CoV2 epidemic, several thousand variants have circulated and others will emerge, specifying that the appearance of these variants over time is a natural process in the history of viruses. , linked to the way these microorganisms replicate. In December 2020, it should be remembered, a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 (known as the 20B / 501Y.V1 line, VOC 202012/01 or B.1.1.7) emerged in the United Kingdom, with a high number of mutations. “This variant has since been detected in 130 countries including Morocco”, continues the ministry, specifying that its transmissibility is 30 to 70% higher than the strains of SARS-CoV-2 previously circulating in the world.
Other SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, including the South African variant (B.1.351) and the Brazilian variant B.1.1.28.1 (P1) have aroused great public health interest and are being monitored. genomics and epidemiology around the world. The National SARS-CoV2 Genomic Watch Consortium will continue to inform health authorities of the genetic evolution of circulating SARS-CoV2 strains in Morocco, and the possible presence of an indigenous variant having an impact on public health, the press release notes. .
Faced with the dynamics of circulation of the British variant in Morocco, the Ministry of Health encourages all citizens to respect health measures to limit the spread of the virus in the community, concludes the ministry.
