The war memorial in Aalten appears to contain a linguistic error shortly before the presentation | Remarkable

A war memorial honoring the Aalten liberators in Gelderland was unveiled on Friday with a linguistic error, reportedly The Stentore Monday. Shortly before the inauguration, it was discovered that they called themselves “liberators” instead of “liberators”. The names of the eighteen dead are spelled correctly.

According to artist Mirjan Koldeweij, four people checked whether the names were spelled correctly. “The last thing you want is a mistake,” Koldeweij says. Yet all have overlooked the word “defenders”.

The flaw was discovered shortly before the work was unveiled, but by now it was too late to change it, says the artist. Koldeweij will see if he can make a plaque that fits us. The error will likely be corrected within a few weeks.

The memorial is dedicated to eighteen British allies who fell in Aalten during the Second World War.
