Two thirds of Slovaks (66.3 percent) described the conflict in Ukraine as unprovoked and inexcusable aggression by Russia. However, as many as 44.8 percent of Slovaks said that the war in Ukraine was caused by the North Atlantic Alliance, led by the USA.

28 percent of people see Putin positively

According to the research, support for Russian President Vladimir Putin has dropped significantly. while in March 2021 it was perceived positively by 55 percent of the population of Slovakia, a year later it was only 28 percent. The Russian president has higher sympathy for men and the older generation. Sympathies for Putin decline with the higher education of the respondents.

64.5 percent of Slovaks agree with the statement that Putin wants to restore the Russian Empire and is therefore a threat not only to Ukraine but also to other countries.

The popularity of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenský currently reaches almost 54 percent in Slovakia. However, as many as 47 percent of Slovaks think that the Ukrainian president should agree to all Russian conditions in order to prevent further bloodshed.

Almost 61 percent of respondents said that the deployment of NATO troops on Slovakia’s eastern border would strengthen the country’s security. Less than 47 percent of respondents believe that the European Union, including Slovakia, should impose the most severe sanctions on Russia, even at the cost of higher energy and petrol prices.

A similar rapid survey was conducted in the Czech Republic on the day of the invasion on February 24. 90 percent of people described the attack on Ukraine as Russia’s aggression.
