The war in Ukraine has entered a new dangerous phase

War in Ukraine is about to enter its most dangerous phase: Putin’s winter strategy vs. NATO’s summer strategy

In an attempt to explain recent improvements in Russian military operations in Ukraine, some Ukrainian officials say, “There are no fools left in Russia anymore.” This ambiguous compliment means that the Russians have finally found a more efficient way to fight this war, as their early incompetence led to the deaths of thousands of their own soldiers.

Precisely because the war in Ukraine appears to have escalated into a bitter war of attrition — when Russia basically bombards Ukrainian cities in the east from its rear, reducing them to rubble, and then moves forward — one would think that the worst of this conflict is over.

But that’s not the case.

I believe that the war in Ukraine is about to enter a new phase, and here’s why: many Russian soldiers and generals have died, but Ukraine’s staunch NATO allies are tired. This war has already led to a huge jump in the prices of natural gas, gasoline and food in Europe – and if it drags on into winter, many families in the European Union may have to choose between heating and food.

I would call the new phase of the war Vladimir Putin’s “winter strategy” against «NATO Summer Strategy.
