According to him, 56% of the Swiss are in favor of closer cooperation with NATO. At the same time, 35% of respondents actively support it, and 21% – partially.
An increase in defense spending is supported by 55% of survey participants. As the newspaper notes, the indicative reversal in views is especially noticeable among the left. Support for strengthening cooperation with NATO among supporters of the socialists reached 76%, and “green” – 73%.
The publication notes that until recently, supporters of the left called NATO “an instrument of US imperialism,” and the term “transatlantic” in certain circles was considered a swear word.
Today, 65% of Swiss people support the country’s participation in the Iron Dome missile defense system. At the moment, the EU is discussing the possibility of purchasing this technology from Israel in order to protect itself from Russia. The deal is valued at tens of billions of dollars.
At the same time, Switzerland’s entry into NATO is supported by only 33% of the country’s inhabitants.
Another surprise of the survey, the newspaper notes, was the Swiss support for arms supplies to Ukraine. 24% of the respondents are unambiguously in favor of this, 8% admit such a possibility. At the same time, 62% of the country’s citizens demand that the government send helmets and body armor to Ukrainians.
As for the sanctions against Russia, 58% of the Swiss believe that their country has not violated neutrality with the restrictions imposed. 62% of respondents welcome the embargo on Russian oil and gas.
