The war in Ukraine: – Claims Russian forces are attacking each other

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense claims that the Buryats, a Siberian people, have attacked the Kadyrovites in the Kherson region of Ukraine. Over 50 soldiers are said to have participated. The number of injured is not known.

It writes Ukrainian Pravda.

– I think we will take it with a certain pinch of salt, says Lieutenant Colonel Geir Hågen Karlsen to Dagbladet and adds:

– But Russia is a corrupt and brutal country. That such things happen does not surprise me. There is obviously a core of truth in much of the information.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense also claims that the Chechens are looting and that they are not fighting at the front – but forming a background troop guarding the other Russian soldiers.

This should have made the burjats, who are allegedly sent to the front line, react.

– Some truth

Assessing the specific incident between the Buryats and the Chechens is difficult, according to Karlsen. He points out that there is a certain truth in the information anyway.

– The Ukrainians give several negative messages about the Russians here. Whether they fight with each other is difficult to say. Whether they plunder – we know they do.

– When it comes to the Chechen forces, they have probably had several tasks, but we know that they are fighting. Among other things, they are attacking the east side of Azovstal, the steel plant in Mariupol, Karlsen adds.

– You do not want to write off everything as propaganda, in other words?

– Good propaganda should have a significant core of truth, and then you exaggerate.

– Feeling cheated

According to the Ukrainian newspaper, the background to the attack is an ethnic conflict, where the burjats believe that they are being discriminated against.

“The Chechens are never at the front, they stay behind. “Their task is to ensure that the Russian occupation forces maintain military activity, which also means opening fire on the troops trying to withdraw,” it writes. Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on Telegram.

They have also reported a similar conflict in the past, between Russian officers and soldiers in the occupied city of Zaporizhia.

– Apparently soldiers feel cheated, because they were promised a fight similar to the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014, which was without resistance, the newspaper writes.

Dissatisfaction among the soldiers

The Russian soldiers are said to have complained to Ukrainian residents that they had been tricked into signing military contracts and participating in hostilities.

– We know that the Russians have put a lot of pressure on people to get them to sign contracts, says Karlsen.

He goes on to say that in some cases Russian soldiers have been sent on a different type of mission than they had been told. This has led to dissatisfaction among the forces.

– How important is the morale of the Russians for the future?

– Morality and will to fight can be absolutely crucial. The Ukrainians are fighting an existential struggle for freedom and independence, something worth fighting for, he replies, adding:

– Many of the Russians probably ask themselves questions about what they are fighting for every day. This means that you get less involved, act passively and are much less effective as soldiers.
