The war in Ukraine: – Brothers transport refugees to Denmark

PRZEMYZL (Dagbladet): – We have come to help, says Denyz Drobot to Dagbladet.

The Ukrainian usually lives in Denmark. Now he and his brother Taras, who in sounding Danish say that he lives outside Vejle, have driven to the Polish-Ukrainian border to help.

They are located in the middle of the arrival hall at the train station in Przemysl – one of nine arrival centers for Ukrainian refugees to Poland. Thousands of refugees arrive here by train. We meet volunteers from Poland and Germany, who stand with signs and cardboard plates where they offer free rides or accommodation.

Some of the refugees also get an opportunity to get to Denmark.

The parents stay

– Are you going to help your own family?

– Not our parents. They have chosen to stay. Both work in a hospital, and even though they are not doctors or nurses, they have chosen to stay to help. But we will help others who want to go to Denmark, says Drobot to Dagbladet.

– There are several like us who have traveled here, he emphasizes.

– How did this come about?

– We mobilize on Facebook, and organized it in a separate Facebook group.

– How many will you help?

– As many as possible, says Denyz Drobot.

Hid

Behind him are mother Maria and six-year-old Oleg from Lviv, western Ukraine. She and her son were out early to get on a train to Poland.

– We realized that we had to leave when the sirens began to howl, she says – exhausted and speechless after the escape.

– We ran and hid. But we realized we had to escape.

There’s not much she can bear to say. The son has been given a sandwich that is eaten with dedication. Volunteers at the train station hand out soup, sandwiches, drinks – and donuts. At a stand, representatives from a Polish mobile company hand out free SIM cards.

Ten people

We meet the brothers again on Saturday night. Now the first two cars with Ukrainians have traveled northwest. Now there is dinner in the stately restaurant at the train station in Przemyzl – and planning meeting for the five-person rescue team they lead.

– Two cars have driven to Denmark. Two cars are waiting here, says Denyz.

– In total, we have ten people on the team who will drive people to Denmark.

– How long will you stay here?

– A good while, he concludes.

According to Danish authorities, Ukrainian citizens can travel to Denmark without a visa.

Asks for Norwegian help

According to local train personnel, a total of seven refugee trains will arrive in Przemizl during Saturday. The train station is one of nine reception centers on the Polish side of the border, where over 100,000 people have already found safety.

Judging by Putin’s behavior, the situation will only get worse, says Michal Dworczyk, chief of staff at the office of the Polish prime minister, to Dagbladet.

He met Dagbladet on the platform on Saturday morning.

The UN has estimated that up to four million people could cross the border from Ukraine.

– What help does Poland expect from Norway?

– We have the capacity to receive many. But we need all the help we can get, says Dworczyk.
