The Walking Dead Star Norman Reedus Shares Excitement for Artistic Freedom in New Daryl Spin-Off Project

The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus expressed admiration for the artistic freedom of his new Daryl spin-off project, and drew interesting parallels to his time on the original series.

What is known:

“We create art,” Reedus shared with Entertainment Weeklytalking about “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon”. The action of the spin-off takes place in Europe and tells the story of the surviving and tormented Daryl, washed up on the shores of France.

Reedus pointed to his experience working on The Walking Dead, which ran for 11 seasons, and noted that it often led to repetitive and repetitive moments.

“I think working on a show like The Walking Dead for so long, whether you realize it or not, you start to get into a rhythm of repeating successful elements. I found myself saying the same lines over and over and we’re using storylines we’ve already seen with other characters, but now we’re not following anything that’s pre-rated.”

For Reedus, the Daryl spin-off is completely different, not obsessed with ratings or popularity culture.

“I feel like we’re not just creating a product for Sunday night. We’re creating art, with a deep meaningful dialogue. It’s completely different, it’s beautiful, touching and surprising, visually and by feel.”

In an interview, he also added that the beloved elements of “The Walking Dead” (especially “those early years”, as he notes) will remain in the new project for true fans. Producer Greg Nicotero, however, has previously hinted at a new kind of undead that will “change all the rules” for interacting with them.

When to expect:

The first six-episode season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon premieres September 10. A second season is already in the pipeline, as is the spin-off The Walking Dead: Dead City, which is set in New York and tells the story of Maggie and Negan.

“The Ones Who Live”, in which Rick and Michonne meet for the first time after years of separation, will air in 2024.
