The Durango City Council has received the Wadokan club after its outstanding participation in the absolute Spanish Kenpo championship, held last weekend in Almuñécar (Granada). This prestigious event has brought together nearly 500 competitors from all over the country and Wadokan has demonstrated its exceptional level by obtaining a total of four medals.
Among the most notable achievements of the weekend, Itzal Merin became Spanish champion by winning the gold medal in the empty hand category. Alex Raducu won the silver medal in kumite, becoming runner-up, and Pablo Gurtubay won bronze in weapon kata. In addition, the club shone in the team kata discipline, adding one more bronze medal to its record.
During the official reception at the Town Hall, the athletes were congratulated for their merits and their contribution to the development of sport in Durangaldea. The mayor, Mireia Elkoroiribe, has expressed her admiration for the effort and dedication of the Wadokan team, as well as for the values they transmit to the youth: «These victories are not only a source of pride for Wadokan, but for all of Durango. Their effort and commitment are an example of perseverance, respect and discipline,” he added.
Success in this competition represents a significant boost for the club, motivating its members to continue perfecting their skills in martial arts and the disciplines associated with Kenpo. As future competitions approach, the team hopes to continue their track of success and contribute to the development of martial arts in Durangaldea. The team’s coach, José Luis Salas, emphasizes the importance of these competitions, pointing out: «The competitions serve as learning and growth for both the students and me. We will continue working for the kids; “We want and must promote sport, as well as respect and discipline.” In turn, he thanked the municipal recognition and highlighted the importance of competitions as tools for learning and growth.
The Wadokan Club thus reaffirms its commitment to sporting excellence and the promotion of martial arts in the region. From the City Council, all citizens were encouraged to support the team in their future competitions and to participate in sports activities that promote an active and healthy life.
