‘The VVD threatens the survival of the Netherlands’ – Wel.nl

The VVD only pays lip service to the concern for the climate and in fact considers the interests of the business community more important than the survival of humanity. That’s what historian and opinion leader claims Thijs Kleinpaste in NRC.

State Secretary for the Environment Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius (VVD) called people who advocate drastic measures to turn the tide ‘drammers’. below her comment on Twitter she compared critics of her policy to her four-year-old nephew who whined for a second ice cream. “Draming doesn’t work.”

Rutte believes that everything must remain ‘feasible and affordable’. Kleinpaste: “Rutte’s words are nothing more than that: words. The ten-year track record of Rutte is appalling, the balance sheet of the cabinet that is currently waiting for replacement is bad. The ‘greenest cabinet ever'” achieves the self-imposed target for CO2reduction is not, while that ambition is already lower than the European target that the Netherlands is, in word, in favor of.”

“The reactions of ministers and parliamentarians of the VVD who set the tone when it comes to the climate – of the accusation against GroenLinks that they would like everyone to “wear goatskin socks” and “live in a black and white picture” to the incantation that we should “still be able to barbecue” to the condescending mantra “don’t be so fussy” – betray that any opposition to the shabbiness of the government policy of Rutte and his cabinet is experienced as exaggerated, unserious or inappropriate.”

The Rutte management culture, Kleinpaste believes, is that of a closed caste that finds ordinary people and their interests a hindrance above all, and is more focused on maintaining itself and its power than on delivering responsible policy. In the case of a problem like climate change, a downright existential danger.
