The votes that nobody anticipated in Baja California Sur

Two months before last Sunday’s elections, the owners of some important hotels in Los Cabos took a poll to see who their employees would vote for and Morena won.

A data published in Veranda that generated concern due to the anti-business vision of Víctor Manuel Castro, who will receive his record as the next governor of this important tourist state.

This character moderated his speech during the debates, but has insisted that he is in favor of tourism only if it generates benefits for the population and has a social component.

That poll was forgotten when the main polling houses reported that Baja California Sur was one of the states where the intention of the vote clearly favored the PAN-PRI-PRD coalition.

The forecast was maintained on Sunday when the polls closed and the exit poll paid by the coalition gave 40.34% of the votes to its candidate, Francisco Pelayo, and 35.90% to Castro.

However, the results showed that Morena was leading in three of the five municipalities of the state, that is, Los Cabos, La Paz and Los Comondú.

Hours later, the State Electoral Institute made public that Castro had won, as well as Morena’s candidates for municipal presidents of the three aforementioned demarcations and 12 of the 16 seats in the local Congress.

What happened? The businessmen wondered on Monday.

One hypothesis was that opinion changed in the days before the election due to the dispersion of money by Morena’s allies and the other that many did not reveal their preferences in advance.

Today there are two currents among businessmen, that of those who assume that they have not known how to communicate with the less favored groups and that of proposing to harden their relationship.

As the days go by, these views will change, as no one would benefit from openly polarizing social groups.

But those stories of the taxi drivers who abused tourists, the problems of insecurity and the disdain for the businessmen of former governors such as Narciso Agúndez and Leonel Cota Montaño also came back to mind.

There is also fear for the future of tourism trusts, whose technical management and transparency in the use of the lodging tax have been crucial for destinations such as Los Cabos and La Paz to grow in recent years.

In addition, they discard a modern Mobility Law and it will not be difficult for taxi drivers to push for Uber and other applications to be banned.

Pollsters saw a developing entity, with a well-approved governor and low unemployment and poverty rates, but many ignored the above and voted for Morena.

Quintana Roo. In the entity governed by Carlos Joaquín González, it turned out that Morena won more municipal presidencies, which may mean a challenge for next year’s gubernatorial elections.

The equation of the federal deputies remained unchanged, so it will be necessary to rule out that voices with new ideas come out to defend the importance of tourism in Mexico in Congress.
