Fuentes: Rebellion
Thus ends my article written an hour before the elections “Tomorrow, let it be then, the beginning to return to the paths of the revolution. The new dawn will be a reality, if we build strength and popular power “[1]. Also, he affirmed, that the peoples must be the vanguard. There can be no movement if the people are not on the move, if they are asleep, if they continue only in passive resistance. The resistance must be permanent, dynamic, strong, it has to lead us to courage and rebellion.
This first round to elect the country’s rulers is giving us hope to build a new democracy, a new system, a new structure, a new country. A house where we all fit, including our enemies. For this, the new government must understand that it has to “make a great effort to govern in the plural sense; terms of political fascism are not admitted in these times»[2].
Since the electoral campaign began, we have always affirmed that “I was going to see many surprises.” Not everything was written. It cannot be that Guatemala was doomed to return completely to the past. There was hopelessness and discouragement in the population, because nothing changes! Yesterday, when we saw the protests, the kitchens built by the right-wing and extreme-right parties feeding their sympathizers, the lines at party headquarters giving people money for their votes, a public ministry that called to report any crime electoral and when it was denounced, they almost never came. People said, here it will be all the same.
It was seen in the tired faces of men, women and young people. Many of them carrying their sons and daughters in their arms, running from one place to another, looking for the tables to vote. Tired faces, trying to make the last effort, to see if they were trying to change the harsh situation in the country.
Of course, the fight is strong and long. Municipalities and Congress will continue to be in the hands of corrupt and gangsters. Organized crime, drug trafficking, laundresses, contractors, financiers, took their eyes on the millionaire budget of the municipalities, where power is played, of the emerging rich and the old. Magic, the corrupt pact, the criminal pact or the economic criminals will continue with their projects. Only organized peoples will be able to stop them and no one else.
Seed, a movement that was born from the struggles in the squares against the corruption of the Patriotic Party. A movement made up of academics, professionals, indigenous and middle-class ladinos, mostly urban, university professors and academics, of the stature of: Edelberto Torres, Fuentes Knight, Carlos Orantes, among many more. Young people who thought and dreamed of themselves as the new politics. A movement not from the left, nor communist, nor indigenous, nor socialist. A progressive movement that thinks at least that a more humane and just country can be built. Reopen the veins of hope of the Guatemalan people.
In fact, the road is long and tortuous. The fascist right is already releasing its poisoned saliva, confusing it with its anti-communist discourse. Calling to take care that we are not allowed to become a Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua. For this reason, as Lucrecia Mack says, “this is not the time to fall into triumphalism, but to take advantage of the resurgence of hope to multiply our efforts”[3]. And you can keep dreaming, to build the history of those below. So that they return to the country, those who were persecuted and expelled by this government and fascist groups such as FundaTerror, Avemilgua, Liga Pro Patria, Friends of the Country. It is the vote so that there are no more migrants fleeing poverty and extreme poverty.
The vote that has been given to Semilla up to now is one of confidence, as Bernardo Arévalo says, and “of courage”, because they dream of a better country. It is not a vote, as some say, “to the colonizer”, it is the vote against “fascism, and violence.” It is the vote of those who still think about the utopia of “peace and freedom”.
It is the vote to enjoy “our rights and trust in a better future. It is a rejection of racism, discrimination, exclusion, oppression, dispossession, eviction. This vote is to find the possibility of fulfilling ourselves according to our worldviews. To recognize all of us as a diverse country and with a vigorous culture. It is to give power to the people who are the source of legitimate political power. The people who carry sovereignty on their shoulders”[4]. It is the vote to continue dreaming of resistance and rebellion.
“It is the vote for life and not for death”
