The vortex draws in hot air. “This will be one of the hottest days of summer”

Tuesday is going to be hot in the whole country, and even hot in places. The highest temperature is forecast in Lower Silesia – even up to 32 degrees Celsius. Slightly less, up to 31 degrees, can be in Silesia, Lubuskie and Greater Poland.

As explained by the tvnmeteo.pl synoptic, Arleta Unton-Pyziołek, the heat stream will be strongly sucked in from the south and south-west by the Dan lowland whirlpool from the North Sea. Why is this going to happen? Well, on the western part of the low, there is cool air (blue arrows in the graphic below), which is definitely wandering towards us. On the other side, on the south and east sides, the vortex draws in heat (red arrows). Due to this heat stream that flows to us, the temperature in the foothill areas can even reach 32-33 degrees Celsius.

However, one must be prepared for the fact that in the hot mass of air, located in front of the cool front that will enter Poland from the west, there will be small but active storm fronts that may turn into lines of storms with violent phenomena. Today’s weather will be typically summer and July – heat and storms. One of the hottest days of this summer is ahead of us.

Hot from the very morning

The fact that it will be hot can be seen from the morning thermometers. At 7 o’clock in Bielsko-Biała it was already 22 degrees Celsius, while in Legnica it was 21 degrees. In most of the country, the temperature was approaching 20 degrees.

What is heat?

We speak of heat when the air temperature is over 30 degrees Celsius at a height of two meters above ground level. Synoptics of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management used to issue warnings against him in the event of reaching and exceeding this temperature limit.

In 2018, the IMGW issued 78 alerts against this danger. A year later, there were 141. There was no heat warning this year.

Temperature records

It was assumed that the highest recorded temperature within the present borders of Poland was 40.2 degrees Celsius, which was recorded in Prószków on July 29, 1921. However, there are some doubts about the authenticity of the record. Experts say that in the neighboring city of Opole, the temperature on that day was 38 degrees C. In addition, the meteorological cage in which the measurements were made could be located at a meter height, not at a height of two meters.

Last year, the highest recorded value was 38.3 degrees Celsius, which fell on June 26 at the weather station in Ceber.

IMGW weather forecasters report that until June 30, 2020, there were a total of 37 hot days recorded at 25 synoptic stations. Until now, the warmest was in Słubice, where the inhabitants of June 13 saw 33.8 degrees C. The second highest temperature was 31.9 degrees C, recorded in Szczecin (June 13) and Poznań-Ławica (June 28). On June 13 in Opole there were also slightly lower 31.8 degrees C and 31.6 degrees C recorded in Zielona Góra and Wieluń.

What to do in hot weather?

The heat can be dangerous. When we struggle with such a high temperature, remember to properly protect the body against overheating and dehydration. Specialists also recommend limiting exposure to the sun and using airy, but covering clothing. You also need to remember about the right amount of fluids consumed. You should cool down with cool, but not cold drinks or a bath. It is also recommended to use air conditioning or ventilation, while avoiding extremely large differences in air temperature. During the heat it is not recommended to take unnecessary physical effort, but you should make sure that the drugs or cosmetics used will not put additional strain on the body.

In the rooms where we are staying, it is necessary to keep cool. If we use air conditioning, you must first close the doors and windows. It should be remembered that the heat can also be dangerous for children, the elderly and animals. Therefore, they should never, even for a moment, be left in a locked car and make sure they need help.
