The model with an unflattering nickname found use in the army, today it is an interesting collector’s item.
The Volvo XC90 is the Swedish brand’s first and probably the best-known SUV to date. However, there is a model in its past that could also rightfully claim the title of innovator. We are talking about the Volvo PT21 model with the somewhat unflattering nickname “Sugga”, translated as “Sow”, which was created especially for the needs of the Swedish army.
The model was created as a hybrid of the Volvo PV800 series, also nicknamed Sugga, which was often used as a taxi car. But as a basis, the automaker used a frame chassis from smaller trucks/utility vehicles, which it shortened. The short front and rear overhang thus ensured a better approach and departure angle, thanks to which the car offered better off-road capabilities.
The PT21 model was produced between 1953 and 1960. Under the hood is a diesel 3.67-liter inline six-cylinder with 90 horsepower, which is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The car offered optional all-wheel drive, a reduction gearbox and lockable differentials. Ideal equipment for the field.
The chassis was raised and equipped with special dampers and springs. Under the raised fenders we see Goodyear all-terrain tires, shod on 16″ steel wheels. These, like the bodywork, are painted in a simple army green color Matte Olive Drab. It is also worth noting that we can find drum brakes on both axles.
The car was produced in several configurations. This particular one that appeared on the web Collecting Cars, is a command car with radio equipment. So we see a long antenna on the roof, the communication equipment itself is in the back of the car.
In addition to the antenna, the body is also decorated with additional holders for tools or canisters, but it is also worth mentioning the specifically stored reserve in the rear. The simply-conceived interior attracts the attention of the set only with green vinyl upholstery.
Volvo reportedly made only 720 pieces army special TP21, while this piece made it all the way to Australia. It can be an interesting piece for collectors. In addition, the current owner of the car has carried out a thorough service, thanks to which the car should be in excellent condition.
In conclusion, let’s just add that the PT21 is definitely not the only machine that the Volvo car company developed and produced for the Swedish army. Trucks such as the TL11/12, TL 22 or TL31 are also worth mentioning, the latter having lasted over 40 years in service and still enjoying great popularity.
