The German concern has not yet made a decision on the next generation of its best-selling model.
The Volkswagen Golf 9 project is in jeopardy, writes the German publication Welt – according to the information provided by the head of Volkswagen, Thomas Schaefer, the decision on the development of the ninth generation model of the compact supercar has not yet been made, and the reason for this is the expected Euro-7 emission norms, which could make the project of such a model more expensive , that it would become uneconomical.
According to experts’ calculations, adapting the internal combustion engine to Euro-7 standards could increase the price of each car by 3,000 to 5,000 euros. For the Golfin, which is already in its eighth generation, barely staying below the 30 thousand mark, it threatens to increase the price to such a level that people will no longer buy it and, as a matter of course, the loss of the status of Europe’s best-selling car.
In this situation, Volkswagen has two possible scenarios: either abandon the development of the ninth generation Golf, or rearrange the model to an electric drive, which will keep it in the offer even after 2035, when the ban on selling cars with internal combustion engines comes into force in Europe. The company will make a decision within the next 12 months.
As for the coming years, Schaefer predicts that the implementation of stricter ecology will lead to the fact that ICE cars worth 10 thousand euros will no longer be available on the European market.
