TVJan Paternoster (34) gave co-coaches Koen Wauters, Natalia and Mathieu Terryn a tit for tat during the penultimate blind auditions of ‘The Voice van Vlaanderen’. He won no fewer than five of the six candidates the coaches had fought for. No matter how great the other coaches’ disappointment was, they fully appreciated it: Jan had fewer candidates than the rest so far. “I felt it starting to weigh,” Mathieu said.
“It was difficult to compete against Jan today. It’s really spectacular how often people have chosen him. But I am happy for him,” Koen responded after the penultimate blind auditions. Mathieu also granted it to his colleague. “Jan has really hit cruising speed.” “His explanations are incredibly good,” Natalia noted. Jan himself was of course over the moon. “I’m having a good day. A lot of people choose me, it’s nice that way,” he beamed proudly.
LOOK. Tim tries again in ‘The Voice of Flanders’
For Natalia it was twice as disappointing. The 29-year-old production manager Tim Blommaert from Ghent already took part in ‘The Voice of Flanders’ two years ago, but then ended up in Koen’s team. Once again, Natalia was impressed by his version of Rhys Lewis’ ‘No Right to Love You’ and hoped she could land him this time. “I thought it was a magical moment, to see you sitting there, so sincere. And also what you sang,” he said. Mathieu turned first, but to no avail. Tim resolutely chose Jan. “It was very fragile, with a lot of emotion. That’s all music is about. You put your heart into it. I immediately want to experience it again, I was taken with it,” says a proud coach Jan. Koen had recognized Tim’s voice, but did not turn around for him again. “It’s good that you’re participating again, because it didn’t last long enough last time.” Tim is more confident than ever on stage, partly thanks to his new girlfriend. “Two years ago I was very insecure. In the meantime, my self-confidence has grown and I appreciate myself more.”

Metal in blues
Natalia also lost out to Jan with metal fan Wouter Maene (34) from Deinze. “It wasn’t always 100 percent perfect, but I enjoyed it and want to put time and energy into taking you to the next level,” Jan responded. Wouter performed a powerful version of ‘Crawling’ by Linkin Park. “Growing up hasn’t always been easy for me. My mother died very early. This song has brought me solace,” says Wouter. Both Koen and Mathieu were not convinced. “It was often not correct, but with guidance you will nail it,” Koen concluded.
LOOK. Natalia is disappointed when Sofie chooses Jan
Natalia was also very disappointed that Sofie Ertryckx (26) from Hasselt chose Jan after her performance of ‘Married to the Blues’ by The Nortons. “I think you have a very beautiful voice. But you were shocked when I turned around. I could teach you to focus more and maintain your individuality,” she tried to convince her. But Sofie saw something more in coach Jan. “You really have a beautiful voice and you are credible. I would like to see a little more dynamics and individual character, but if you want to sing the blues, you are certainly welcome in my team.”

A bell of a voice
Jan also won with ‘four-turner’ Christophe Verholle (42) from Roeselare. Christophe shocked the entire audience with his version of ‘The Rambler’ by Black Stone Cherry. Christophe is an educator but also a singer-guitarist with the rock group Blain. “For votes like that, I am happy to be in this seat. This was an incredibly good audition. Even more, it was really a performance,” said Mathieu. “If you want to continue doing this genre, you will continue to touch people,” Natalia responded. “It was very cinematic. You have drawn the entire room to your lips. You have a great voice, beautiful,” Jan concluded.

Job given up for music
For communications manager Anouk Dubois (34) from Duffel, Jan had to make little effort to bring her in, because the other coaches were still hungry for her rendition of ‘Muddy Waters’ by LP. Yet Koen already seemed to regret not turning around. “I’m glad Jan has turned around, because I’m genuinely curious about what you will bring next time. I think you will surprise us.” Jan praised her natural performance, cool voice, musicality and rough attitude. A dream comes true for Anouk. Just before the corona period, she gave up her job to study music. “My years in the jazz studio were the best of my life. I wanted to dedicate myself completely to music, but then a worldwide lockdown came and music was out of the question. To be able to pay for life, I started working again. But now I want to prove to myself that I have to put music back in the foreground.”
