52 million euros will be distributed among the autonomous communities, to offer 706 more places in public universities, exceeding 6,100

The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday the financing for increase by more than 700 the places that public universities offer for the degree of Medicine. Specifically, to Galicia will correspond to a little more four million eurosto expand 53 seats.
The approved Royal Decree regulates the granting of up to 52 million euros to the autonomous communities to finance the creation of 706 places of the Medicine Degree in public universities. That would mean offer the next course a total of 6,106, that is, 15% more than the previous year.
At a press conference, the Government spokesperson and Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Isabel Rodriguezhas highlighted that this measure aims to “facilitate the long-term increase in the availability of medical professionals for stop the deficit of health professionals in different specialties.
Rodríguez has assured that this deficit is “a consequence” of a “prolonged decline in public mir offers between 2011 and 2018”, associating it with most of the legislature of Mariano Rajoy’s PP Government. Distribution by autonomous communities
The distribution of funds and new positions will be as follows: Andalusia will increase its positions by 155 by receiving 11,028,557 million euros; Aragón will have 25 more places, with 2,102,503 euros; Balearic Islands, 9 more places with 790,501 euros; Canarias 15, with 834,825 euros; Cantabria 16, with 1,312,002 euros; Castilla-La Mancha 16, with 1,432,002 euros; Castilla y León 66, with 4,808,556 euros; Catalonia 126, with 9,375,265 euros; and Madrid 75 more places, with financing of 5,316,380 euros.
For its part, Navarra will have 10 more places thanks to financing of 516,550 euros; Valencian Community with 39 more, receiving 3,385,505 euros; Extremadura 29, with 2,001,742 euros; Basque Country 37, with 2,179,602 euros; Asturias 15, with 1,237,502 euros; and Murcia 20 more, with 1,610,002 euros. Galicia, as indicated, will receive 4,068,506 euros to add 53 places to the offer of the Medicine degree taught at the University of Santiago (USC).
The central Executive indicates that the Royal Decree approved this Tuesday responds to the needs exposed in the supply-need studies of medical specialists published by the Ministry of Health and, specifically, the report published in March 2021 with a time horizon until 2035.
The report found a “insufficient” number of students graduating from medical schools in relation to the offer of Specialized Health Training places (mir) and the needs of specialists in some specialties, such as Family and Community Medicine.
