Prof. Dr. Nicolae Suciu, primary obstetrician-gynecology physician and general manager of the “Alessandrescu-Rusescu” National Institute for Mother and Child Health in Bucharest, spoke at DC News and DC Medical on the vital role of HPV vaccination in preventing genital cancers.

According to the doctor, there is a close connection between the infection with the HPV virus and the development of genital cancer, which makes vaccination against this infection crucial for the population, both for women and men, starting from the age of adolescence.

“We have the evidence about HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection, and it was evidence confirmed by the awarding of the Nobel Prize, for the involvement of this virus in the origin of cervical cancer. If we were able to find financial resources, the benefits would be evident in a multiple maybe eight, ten times greater, to vaccinate against the strains of this virus, and not only for the female population, but also for the male population.

There are European countries, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, which have promoted and include in the health programs vaccination at the age of puberty, after 11 years, up to 14 years, they make vaccines against the virus with more and more complete valences that address HPV genotypes.

It was tried, the implementation was successful, but there were currents that, as in many other aspects of medicine, opposed such novelties, I mean the vaccine therapies, and last but not least, the vaccine treatment that would imposes in the prevention of HPV infection is quite expensive. They must be done in national programs, the population must be aware and involved in recognizing the disadvantages of the conditions.

If primary prophylaxis, for financial reasons, is postponed, we can talk about secondary prophylaxis, which means carrying out specific screening tests. A lot of the population that addresses us, and through the media they could become aware much more easily, have data about these aspects of testing possible recruitments for oncological conditions. Screening triages from a healthy population, the vulnerable population and which, sometimes and most of the times, requires examinations, additional determinations in specifying the diagnosis.

There are written records that place Dr. Victor Babeș among those who had the inspiration, materialized and did research to prove that by evaluating the cells in the intimate sphere of the woman, diagnoses can be made in the early phase.” informed Prof. Dr. Nicolae Suciu.
