The virus is still not skipping school

With nearly 400 cases of covid-19 reported during the week of March 15 to 21, the pandemic continues to impact schools. A high figure which is explained in particular by the discovery of a chain of infection within the international school of Mondorf-les-Bains.

What the Prime Minister called Wednesday a “lack of room for maneuver” is reflected once again in the figures. After the observation of a stronger presence in wastewater, the virus also remains very much alive in schools, since 397 cases were identified among students and staff of primary and secondary during the week of 15 to March 21, indicates Thursday the Ministry of National Education

After several weeks marked by a relative stagnation of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the samples taken from the Luxembourg wastewater treatment plants, LIST reports an “upward trend” in its weekly report, published on Tuesday. .

While the majority of reports (300) come from isolated cases with a source of infection outside the school environment, nearly a hundred others have their origin in infections which may be internal to schools. During the past week, 38 cases have been identified in six primary schools and seven high schools with between three and five positive cases in the same class.

A chain of contamination has, for its part, been identified in a fundamental class of the international school of Mondorf-les-Bains where six students have tested positive. A situation which led to the quarantine of all students and staff “until March 22,” said the official statement, released Thursday.

Announced at the beginning of March, the establishment of a test phase intended to allow students to carry out screening for covid-19 themselves will begin on Wednesday, announces the Ministry of National Education. 9,000 kits will be distributed in six establishments.

The publication of these figures comes the day after the start of the distribution of 9,000 rapid test kits in six establishments in the country. A test phase which should last until April 2 and aims in particular to bring back “serenity in class”. The possible generalization of this device should be decided at the beginning of April and applied after the Easter holidays.
