The number of people infected with the coronavirus in Eastern European countries has exceeded 20 million, the highest level since the beginning of the pandemic. Many countries in the region have low vaccination rates, with less than half of people receiving at least one vaccine.

The highest vaccination rates in the region are in Hungary, where 62% of the population have received at least one vaccine, while in Ukraine only 19% have received one vaccine. The number of new cases in the region is constantly growing and has reached an average of 83,700 cases per day, which is the highest level since November last year.

Although only about four percent of the world’s population is in Eastern Europe, it accounts for about one-fifth of the world’s reported cases of Covid-19. Three of the five countries with the highest rates of coronavirus deaths are in Eastern Europe: Russia, Ukraine and Romania.

As winter approaches, people gather more indoors, but this contributes to Covid-19, the World Health Organization said.

A survey by the European Commission shows that at least one in three Eastern European countries does not trust their national healthcare system.

People are protesting against the introduction of compulsory vaccinations and vaccination certificates to attend public events and entertainment venues. According to Eurobarometer, the average level of mistrust in the EU is 18%.

In Russia – 8.3 million infected

More than 40% of new cases in Eastern Europe are registered in Russia, where 120 infected people are detected every five minutes, Reuters reports. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 8.3 million Covid-19 infections have been registered in Russia, but more than 230,000 people have died.

The state health care system is overloaded, admitted Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko. So far, only about 36% of the Russian population have received at least one pot against Covid-19. In Moscow, all companies and institutions are expected to close this week, except for shops with basic goods and pharmacies in an attempt to limit the spread of the virus.

In Slovakia, the highest morbidity rate has been registered since mid-October, the Ministry of Health has announced. The country of 5.5 million has one of the lowest vaccination coverage in the EU, with only about half of adults completing a full vaccination course.

In Romania, hospitals are overcrowded in both urban and rural areas. In October, in a country where vaccination rates are low, an average of one person dies from a coronavirus and its complications every five minutes.

There are two ways to fight the virus – vaccination or arcing

There are approximately 2.7 million cases of Covid-19 infection and more than 62,400 deaths in Ukraine. In order to limit the morbidity, the state of emergency has been extended in the country, but local governments can lift or introduce additional restrictions in their territory depending on the situation. Since last week to

attending public events or using public transport, a vaccination certificate or a negative Covid-19 test must be presented. The introduction of restrictions has led to widespread fraud with vaccination certificates.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has even been forced to convene a special meeting to discuss the fight against fraudsters. Police suspect that at least 15 hospital staff in various parts of the country are involved in the issuance of falsified vaccination certificates.

“There are only two ways to fight the virus – vaccination or arcing,” President Zelensky said. “I am against the arc for the economy,” he said. To promote vaccination, Ukrainian municipalities have begun vaccination in supermarkets, where on October 22, more than 250,000 people received vaccinations during the day.

Forty million Ukrainians can choose between Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Sinovac, but only about 15% have received two vaccines. This is the lowest level in Europe, except for Armenia, Reuters notes.

Unvaccinated people are threatened with housekeeping

Austria has threatened that if the situation in hospital intensive care units deteriorates, the unvaccinated could be subject to strict quarantine restrictions or so-called housekeeping.

“We are approaching a vulnerable pandemic,” said Chancellor Alexander Schalenberg after an extraordinary government meeting. However, he rejected the possibility that the household could refer to those who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 or who have become ill. The Chancellor expressed hope that such a possibility would serve as a signal to those who are late for vaccination. There are too many “reserved”, Schalenberg said.

Despite the recent increase in the number of new infections, the situation in hospital intensive care units is still broadly stable. Currently, Covid-19 patients occupy approximately 220 beds in these wards.

If the number of these patients reaches 600, Austria will have reached the fifth phase of the pandemic response plan, which will include extensive restrictions on the movement of unvaccinated people. About 62% of vaccinated Austrians are fully vaccinated.
