VIRTUS SEGAFREDO BOLOGNA – ASVEL VILLEURBANNE 79-84 (22-18, 50-36; 64-63)
The harsh law of the Euroleague, where the games never end. After having wasted 19 points of advantage, Virtus is reassembled by ASVEL and loses a very bad match at home. It definitely didn’t take, but the French won with full merit, playing a great second third and a last period of nerves, while Segafredo perhaps thought she had won too soon, a bit like already seen in Kaunas. There were also strange choices, such as the first change called after 6 ‘in the third quarter (and made after 8’) and the quintet that had suffered again in the final game. But mostly it was a matter of nerves. Once a game that was not expected was reopened, Segafredo was no longer able to close it, and found herself in a situation that she had not expected. All experience, of course, but the opportunity was greedy, and was not taken. The only happy note is the return of Shengelia, who already appeared in good condition.
Report: the first quarter is balanced, with ASVEL often finding the triple, while for Segafredo Lundberg and Ojeleye start well. After 7 ‘Shengelia is seen on the field, and the second Juventus unit works, between Pajola who recovers the balls and Teodosic who scores anyone: 8-0 and 22-16, then retouched to 22-18 at the end of the first quarter.
We start again and Virtus arrives immediately at +11, with a triple from Shengelia. And when Teodosic turns on – again -, the +16 also arrives, at 39-26. The +19 also arrives, then the guests shake up and try to get back on De Colo’s wings. The final time, however, is still black and white: 50-36 halfway through.
It starts again and Villeurbanne returns to -9, with a couple of bad black and white defenses that infuriate Scariolo. And shortly after, after a couple of bad things from Hackett, the guests also arrive at -3, also missing the draw. Scariolo has 4 changes ready, but the game goes on for over three minutes without stopping. Ojeleye makes him breathe. But now the inertia is French, and at 30 ‘the advantage is minimal: 64-63.
Last quarter: ASVEL overtakes, after a vibrant protest from Teodosic for a foul not whistled. The French also arrive at +4 (68-72), Shengelia and Lundberg answer. Very little is scored and the balance goes all the way. Scariolo re-proposes the quintet of the third quarter, and that’s not great, that’s it. Lundberg misses the two free passes, and De Colo signs 74-77. Ojeleye misses, Mathews scores, and in fact it’s over here. It ends 79-84.
