The viral drink boba makes you paralyzed, this is an explanation from an internal medicine doctor

KONTAN.CO.ID – Jakarta. Viral story of a 20 year old girl who was paralyzed as a result of drinking boba or bubble drink. Is it true that the effects of boba drinks can cause paralysis?

The viral story was told by a 20-year-old woman from Bekasi, named Ranya. The viral story came after he shared his personal experiences regarding the side effects of his penchant for consuming boba or bubbles.

The personal experience told by Ranya through the Twitter @dangobulet social media account immediately became the public spotlight, because many people also like boba.

When confirmed by Kompas.com, Ranya admitted that in one day she could consume two glasses of boba. He usually takes boba three to four days a week. He started doing this habit since December 2019.

During consuming boba, Ranya felt that she did not feel anything strange about her body. Until one day, this 20 year old woman felt numbness in her feet. For six days, the numbness in her legs didn’t go away. Her leg was then temporarily paralyzed.

Ranya then decided to have her condition checked by a doctor in March 2020, and was diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus. “Taken to a general practitioner, he said he was just deficient in vitamin D. It still felt twitching, even when he walked, his legs were drooping (withered). Finally he was taken to an internal medicine doctor and checked that he had type 2 diabetes mellitus,” he said. .

However, is it true that consuming too much boba or bubble tea can cause diabetes to paralysis? Responding to this problem, an Internal Medicine Specialist, Consultant for Endocrine, Metabolic and Diabetes Dr. Wismandari Wisnu SpPD-KEMP gave an explanation.

According to Wismandari, someone who consumes a lot of food or drinks containing fat and sugar will be prone to diabetes. “But this is not a fast process. It takes time for a person’s blood sugar to rise, then pre-diabetes and eventually diabetes,” he said.

The danger is, even when you are in diabetes, sometimes a person doesn’t experience symptoms, so you don’t immediately consult a doctor. Wismandari said, patients often come to the doctor precisely because of complications from diabetes, such as the following:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Kidney failure
  • Blindness
  • Wounds in the legs that are difficult to heal
  • Tingling or numbness (pain)
  • Impotence
  • Whiteness and others

“Or it comes because of an infection, but then you get high blood sugar levels,” he said.

Like what happened to Ranya, according to him, it was not something that happened suddenly. It is possible that blood sugar has risen for some time without realizing it, because there are no symptoms. “And it often happens (blood sugar rises without any physical symptoms),” he explained.

After a while, the sugar in the blood increases, then complications start to occur. One of them is neurological complications, can be peripheral nerves in the form of tingling, numbness or pain that most often occurs in the tips of the feet or hands, and complications in the form of a stroke that can cause paralysis.

“Complications that also often occur are the legs, where there is damage to the peripheral nerves and blood flow, so that if a wound occurs it is difficult to heal, then it can be amputated,” he said.
