“Today a video of the execution by Russian military personnel of Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered appeared on the Internet! This is another violation of the Geneva Conventions and a manifestation of disrespect for international humanitarian law! The Russian side again and again shows its face as a terrorist!” Lubinets emphasized.
He stated that in this regard he, as the Ukrainian ombudsman, would appeal to the International Committee of the Red Cross, whose mandate includes recording crimes against prisoners of war.
“And the video clearly shows that the Ukrainian military is performing the necessary steps, which show that they are surrendering! The soldiers were disarmed, and their hands were raised up. They did not pose any threat! The Russian side should have taken them prisoner and provided status of prisoners of war,” he emphasized.
Lubinets will also appeal to the United Nations so that the UN permanent monitoring mission will record this fact as another striking example of violation of international humanitarian law by Russia.
“The Russian Federation must be punished for every similar case of execution of Ukrainian soldiers who surrender! I note that they are not isolated – this is the murder of soldier Alexander Matsievsky and other military men who surrendered. This is also the public execution of prisoners of war in Yelenovka!”, – noted the Ombudsman.
Let us remind you that this is not the first violation by the Russian Federation of the norms and customs of war. Thus, on April 11, a video appeared online in which Russian occupiers brutally executed a Ukrainian military man.
Later, Human Rights Commissioner Dmitry Lubinets said that Ukrainian intelligence had previously established the identities of the Russians who killed our military man.
Soon, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin was responsible for the brutal execution of a Ukrainian soldier by his soldiers.
