In an extraordinary session, the Seimas urgently considered and adopted amendments to the Law on Excise Duty on Liquefied Petroleum Gas on Thursday.
According to the adopted new provisions presented to the Seimas by members of the Lithuanian Party of Regions Andrius Palionis and Jonas Pinskus and member of the Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union faction Valius Ėuolas, for oil gas and gaseous hydrocarbons when they are used as fuel for heating, as well as for oil gas and gas for heating for hydrocarbons bottled in gas cylinders, from March 1. it was decided to apply a fixed excise rate of 13 euros per ton of the product. Currently valid from 2024. January 1 an excise duty rate of 304.10 euros per ton of the product is applied.
When submitting the project, the government proposed to reduce the excise duty rate to 41 euros per ton, the Budget and Finance Committee led by conservative Mindaugas Lingės also did not support the reduction to 13 euros per ton.
Commenting on the voting results, the initiators of the project were happy that the Seimas supported their proposal. Nor were they surprised that the names of the authors of the actual idea were “forgotten” in the official report prepared by the Seimas press office.
“It is likely that those ruling in this way are already preparing for the upcoming elections and are trying to rehabilitate themselves in the eyes of farmers, for whom this issue is particularly important. It is possible that our proposal was supported by the fear of a new farmer’s picket, which has been talked about more and more recently. There may be more reasons, but the fact remains – in the end, the proposal we submitted and based on calculations was approved”, A. Palionis, J. Pinskus and V. Ėuolas rejoiced.
