/ world today news/ Iliana Yotova celebrated in Belogradchik 171 years since the outbreak of the uprising
“The state is in debt to Northwestern Bulgaria. Not documents and strategies, but real care with real results is needed to stop the North West being the most westernized region. This part of Bulgaria is one of the most beautiful with its magnetic nature, but also the richest with its hardworking and patriotic people who want opportunities for development.” This was stated by Vice President Iliyana Yotova in Belogradchik, where she celebrated 171 years of the uprising. “Let’s wish our rulers to be worthy of the memory of the heroes we honor,” stressed Iliyana Yotova.
The vice president attended the memorial service for the dead, laid flowers in front of the graves of the initiators of the uprising and took part in the lithium procession to the Belogradchish fortress.
“With 50-60 guns, the people here faced the mighty Turkish empire. A quarter of a century before the April Uprising, the entire North-West was on fire, thousands of enslaved Bulgarians were free in their souls, they were brave, because no weapon has power against patriotism, the will for freedom and faith. The claims that Bulgaria got its freedom for nothing are shameful. The insurgent North West is proof that this is not the case. He started the national liberation struggles,” said Iliyana Yotova in her speech.
“The memory of the first self-organized uprising of the Northwest, of the blood shed and of the immeasurable thirst for freedom, we must preserve and pass on to the generations. Because a nation that doesn’t know its past has no future,” the vice-president emphasized and quoted the writer Vladimir Zarev, who in his novel “Summer of 1850” immortalized the uprising: “A nation without memory is like a house without a door, anyone can enter it.”
Earlier, Iliyana Yotova held a meeting with the mayor of the Belogradchik municipality, Boris Nikolov, at which the need for greater commitment of the state to this region was highlighted.
