„In the yellowed pages of the long Bulgarian history, there are many examples of won battles, of military honor and valor. Among these victories shine the golden copies of knowledge, culture and spirituality. These warriors have never been defeated by anyone. These warriors are still there today. With the most valuable weapon in his hands – the weapon of knowledge, culture and spirituality.” With these words, Vice President Iliana Yotova welcomed the residents and guests of the city of Pernik, with whom she was celebrating May 24.
The Vice President defined May 24 as the most Bulgarian and unifying holiday. “May 24 is the holiday of all those who carry the lighted torches of knowledge and pave the way for Bulgaria forward, make our country known throughout the world. Over 300 million people in the world write with our Cyrillic letters,” said Iliana Yotova.
“We are proud of May 24, regardless of whether we live within the borders of Bulgaria or outside them. The spiritual territory of Bulgaria is much larger than its physical territory, it reaches everywhere where there are Bulgarians and the beautiful Bulgarian word is flowing”, emphasized the vice-president.
In her speech, Iliyana Yotova highlighted Bulgaria’s great contribution to the world. “Through the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius and their disciples, Bulgaria gave birth to the third Christian civilization – the Slavic one. Literacy and rich culture have gone far beyond the borders of our country. Today, when talking about Bulgaria, everyone says that it is the country of spirit and culture. It is our responsibility to preserve this authority and pass it on to generations,” the vice president said.
Iliana Yotova thanked the Bulgarian teachers for coping even with the most difficult trials, because they carry in their hearts the spirit of the Cyril and Methodius work and the love for Bulgarian children.
“Today we bow to the cultural workers who keep us alive and proud in the difficult moments of the pandemic. The state is still your debtor and should support you more,” the vice-president pointed out.
Iliyana Yotova concluded her greeting with the words: “Let us never forget that the Bulgarian people were born from speech, literature, knowledge and culture. Let’s raise our children in pride that they are Bulgarians.”
