They will still talk in Rome

Bulgaria’s veto over the start of northern Macedonia’s talks with the EU also affected May 24th. The two prime ministers, Kiril Petkov and Dimitar Kovachevski, will not attend a pilgrimage to St. Cyril’s tomb in Rome on Monday. Both will be in the Italian capital for traditional meetings with Pope Francis on the eve of the Feast of Letters.
Petkov and Kovachevski still planned to meet for talks in Rome.
Bulgaria’s veto remains, Kiril Petkov announced on Friday. A day earlier, he received EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhei. According to a statement from the Council of Ministers, he and Petkov have not said a word about Northern Macedonia. However, Varhei himself did not hide from journalists that he is here to lobby for the release of Skopje in the EU and that he expects this to happen “within days”. However, Petkov denied making a promise.
“As prime minister, I do not make any commitments on my own,” he said. If such a decision is made, it will first go through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then through a coalition council and finally through parliament. Petkov described as “fake news” rumors that he had reached an agreement with the Macedonians to lift the veto. Late in the evening, in a video address, Petkov asked President Rumen Radev to convene the CIS. There, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was to report to politicians on how relations with the RSM were developing and for them to decide on the veto.
“I am back in Sofia in three weeks,” Varhei said after it became clear that our country’s position remained unchanged.
