The Czech-Polish OT-64 SKOT armored personnel carrier was first seen on the front line, where soldiers of the Defense Forces are fighting. A photo of Ukrainian fighters standing in front of an armored personnel carrier was published on July 5 on the Twitter account of Arslon Xudosi, reports the Ukrainian Focus.
Reviewers from Army Recognition write in the comments to the photo that the Ukrainian forces are actively looking for ways to strengthen the defense capability, and the OT-64 SKOT is useful because its versatility makes it suitable for various military operations, including troop transport, reconnaissance and support missions .
And although there were no official statements from the Czech Republic or Poland about the delivery of this type of vehicle to Ukraine, in February of this year it became known that such an armored personnel carrier was purchased by volunteers for the defense fighters.
The OT-64 SKOT is a wheeled amphibious armored personnel carrier that was developed and produced in the early 1960s by the joint efforts of Poland and then Czechoslovakia.
The armored personnel carrier has a mass of 14.5 tons and dimensions: length 7.44 m, width 2.55 m and height 2.71 m. It can accommodate a crew of two people and 18 passengers.
The vehicle is equipped with 6 to 13 mm thick armor that provides protection against small arms fire. As for weapons, the OT-64 SKOT is equipped with a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun and a 14.5 mm KPV machine gun. These weapons provide firepower to support amphibious troops during operations.
The armored personnel carrier is equipped with a Tatra T-928-14 V-8 air-cooled diesel engine with a power of 177 horsepower. Although these figures are not impressive by modern standards, it can accelerate up to 94 km per hour on the highway and swim in water at a speed of 9 km per hour. The autonomous travel of 710 km of the OT-64 SKOT allows the vehicle to perform long missions without recharging.
The armored personnel carrier has an impressive history, having been used during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the Western Sahara War, the Iran-Iraq War, Operation Blue Star in 1984 and the Syrian Civil War.
“Due to its versatility, mobility and amphibious capabilities, it has become a popular choice for military forces facing a variety of operational scenarios,” the experts concluded.
Earlier it was reported that Germany plans to transfer to Ukraine an arms package with 130 armored vehicles. It will include 64 Bandvagn 206 tracked all-terrain vehicles and 66 armored personnel carriers, probably Fuchs 1.
