Venezuela’s government and opposition resume talks
The political crisis in Venezuela began in 2018, when opposition leader Juan Guaido failed to recognize incumbent President Nicolas Maduro’s victory in the presidential election. More than 60 countries of the world for the winner and therefore also the president azine directly to Guaido. After a brutal crackdown on protests, harsh economic sanctions were imposed on Venezuela, causing spiraling inflation and forcing millions to flee.
Now the opposition wants to hold free and fair elections in 2024, while the current Venezuelan government is asking the international community to recognize Nicolas Maduro as president in all respects, as well as to lift the sanctions imposed. Once again the talks could take place in Mexico.
