ANNOUNCEMENTS

Numerous conifers in the Veluwe will be cut down over the next few years and replaced by deciduous trees. Staatsbosbeheer hopes this will prevent the fires from spreading rapidly in the area.

Conifers are more flammable than deciduous trees, which have a fire-retardant effect with their leaves. This creates so-called fire lines, so that a fire spreads less quickly from one area to another, he writes. Gelderland broadcast.

Candidate trees for felling are marked with an orange dot. Forest ranger Laurens Jansen points out that not all conifers with such a spot are felled at the same time. “Over the next few years, we will gradually cut them down. In some places there are already young deciduous species and by giving them space they can really act as a stop line,” he explains.

Danger to recreational and health care institutions

Fires are becoming increasingly common in the Veluwe, posing a threat to the many recreational parks and health establishments in the region. The Institute for Physical Security said last year that the Veluwe was a high risk area in terms of fires and that emergency services and governments needed to act.

It is not known exactly how many trees will be cut down.
