Although the sign on 104th Street in East Harlem still indicates that the sweeper runs on Mondays and Fridays, drivers now only have to move their vehicles one day a week.
Since starting this Monday, the parking rules re-enter into force after months of not being in effect due to the pandemic.
“I think not just one day is a good idea, because today they are not throwing much garbage in the street. There is not much traffic, ”said a neighbor.
The city has decided that in residential areas such as the sweeper, it will only run on the last day indicated on the sign.
In the case of this street, the alternate parking rules will go into effect on Thursdays.
While in this other only on Fridays.
Mayor Bill De Blasio told a news conference that the street cleaning process should be examined to determine if some streets need to be cleaned twice a week or just once.
For some neighbors like Clara however, what some streets need is more frequent cleaning.
“There are times when there is too much garbage and that gives bad smells”.
Although for now this measure will remain in effect until September, the city is studying the possibility of making it permanent.
But some neighbors believe this would not work on all streets
“It depends on how you are dumping garbage on the streets. If it’s like this like now, if it happens once, it’s fine because it’s not very full of things, ”said another neighbor.
The authorities also say that people who are in quarantine for covid-19 and receive a parking ticket during the days that the sweeper passes can appeal them by sending a medical note.
The new rules do not apply to metered streets, which are cleaned daily. Shopping streets are also unaffected by the new rules.
